RE: The Doctor

Evelyn studied the Doctor thoughtfully. He was almost disconcertingly observant. She didn't tend to advertise her particular abilities, even the more subtle ones, not as a rule anyway. But she felt oddly comfortable with this man-- he just seemed to exude a sense of trustworthiness. Which probably would have made her wary of him had she not been so preoccupied with the fantastical world they had entered.

"I wouldn't call myself psychic, exactly," she said carefully. "Though I've sometimes had those odd moments people get sometimes, like where you think of somebody and then they call you, that sort of thing." She was prevaricating, heavily downplaying the truth, something she always strongly disliked in others, but she had already learned the hard way that she was better off pretending to be as normal as possible. Even when the man opposite her was very obviously anything but normal. Perhaps especially because of that.

And then he was telling her that he was a Time Lord (Time Lord! Seriously!), from a distant planet, saying it so casually, so matter-of-factly, and she turned to him wide-eyed, not quite knowing what to say.  She'd encountered aliens on her Travels of course, fleeting glimpses, snatches of ineffable speech that was sometimes so beyond her senses that it barely registered to her mind as language, hints of culture and religion, incredible landscapes that she so often tried and failed to capture with paint and canvas.  But this was the first time she had stumbled on an alien while awake and fully lucid, while fully present.  Not that he looked like anything other than a rather eccentric human, but she of all people knew that appearances could be deceiving.

As though it had stumbled momentarily over the revelation from the Doctor, it took her mind a moment to catch up to what he was saying.  She squared her shoulders and attempted to smooth down her tangled mass of short brown hair, to give herself a chance to adjust to the flurry of new information she was receiving today.  "Psychic fireflies," she said.  "You learn something new every day."  Her sneakers squished a little on the damp, mossy forest floor as she pivoted again, gazing curiously about at their exotic surroundings before looking back at the Doctor.  "And how do you suppose we got here?"
