There is a package -- a large flat box -- wrapped in shiny red paper and trimmed with blue ribbon with a large bow. It's sitting on Evelyn's coffee table. The tag attached reads "To Evelyn, From Theta."

Evelyn

Evelyn, clad in a plush robe and a pair of faux-fur-lined slippers despite the unseasonal December warmth, pads into the living room. She absently sips at a cup of coffee, eyes half-lidded, mind still clouded with sleep. Crossing by the darkened tree in the corner– she finally put the lights on it last night, but nothing else– she shuffles forward towards the couch, where she finally notices the gift. One eyebrow raises as she lifts it in one hand, steaming cup still balanced in the other, and a smile flourishes on her face when she reads the tag. A hopeful sort of warmth rises within her.

“Doctor?” she calls softly, glancing around, craning her neck to peer into the hallway. “You still here?”

The Doctor had already been awake for several hours, piddling around in his TARDIS workshop and tinkering. But he left his ship just in time to see Evelyn awake.

He emerged from the hallway, having heard her call for him. “Yep,” he replied, popping the last ‘p’. Entering the living room, the Time Lord saw her looking the gift over. A mischievous grin tried to mere bloom on his lips as he remembered what was in the box. He was able to keep a straight face, but his deep amber eyes flickered with impishness and anticipation.

He stopped in front of the coffee table and stuffed his hands into the pockets of his pinstriped suit trousers. “Go on, then. Open it.”

“You came!” she said happily as he appeared from the hallway. She turned the package over in her hands. “I wasn’t sure you would.”

Smiling, she tugged at the ribbon until it slid loose, and then began popping free the corners of the wrapping paper. “I got you something too,” she remarked as she peeked beneath the paper. “Haven’t wrapped it yet, though.” Lifting her head to look at him, she flashed him a cheeky grin. “It will probably mysteriously appear under the tree in the morning, fully gift-wrapped. But not before. Which means you’re going to have to stick around if you want it.”

“Oh, I have every intent of stickin’ around,” the Time Lord replied quite seriously, his eyes still betraying a glint of impishness as he watched Evelyn pull loose the wrapping paper. “Had that in mind before you even mentioned a gift.”

His eyes followed the movements of her fingers as she peeled off the paper and began to open the box. Inside, she would find a tacky Christmas sweater – ruby red knit decorated with green sequins which formed the shape of a huge evergreen tree on the front. Interspersed in the tree were shimmering beads of may different colours in small groups: some shaped like bells, some shaped like balls, and a beaded gold star sat at the top of the glittery monstrosity. He’d picked it up on one of their last trips, when they’d gone back to 1985.

But a blue velvet ring box would tumble out when she unfolded the sweater.

Evelyn began to laugh as she removed the lid from the box. “Oh, Lord, oh, no–” she said, grinning and shaking her head. “Bless your heart. Hearts!” she corrected herself quickly. Stepping around the coffee table, she sat on the couch so she could balance the box on her lap while she removed the sweater. “You and your ugly Christmas sw– oh!”

The ring box rolled from the folds of the sweater as she lifted it, dropping to the cushion by her hip. Wide eyes flicked up to the Doctor, searching his face. Meticulously, she refolded and replaced the sweater in its package before reaching for the little velvet box, and then the words began to tumble from her mouth in a jumble as she lifted the lid. “I– what– did you– what is– you–”

Inside the velvet box Evelyn would find a gold ring: engraved into it in Circular Gallifreyan was the phrase: “my dearest love, throughout all of time and space” and set in the middle was a single round stone, a star sapphire that was a deep midnight blue. The starburst pattern was a very pale bluish-white at its edges, and white in the centre; its spindly spoked arms curved gracefully over the face of the stone.

The Doctor watched silently as Evelyn began to lift the lid. He restrained his gob, wanting to see how she’d react.

Evelyn’s teeth found her lower lip and nibbled as she lifted the velvet-covered lid, and she gasped as the glimmer of the blue stone caught her eye. “Oh..” she whispered, and when she looked up at him, there was a shimmer of tears in her eyes. “Doctor, it’s beautiful.”

Delicately, she lifted the ring from its cushion and turned it over in her fingers, studying the exquisite detailing, the loops and whorls of the writing. Her eyes rose to his again. “What does it say?”

“My dearest love, throughout all of time and space,” he replied softly, watching and inwardly jumping for joy as she examined and admired the ring.

Indeed, he didn’t have to think much to repeat the translation: he’d chosen the phrase and engraved it into the ring himself, holing himself up in his workshop on the TARDIS. With Evelyn being busy at the shop during the Christmas holidays, it affording him to use a few days traveling by himself to find the stone, have the ring made, and do the fine, detailed work of engraving.

Vocal response escaped her, so she curled her left hand around the ring and moved closer to the Doctor, wrapping her arms around him and pressing her lips to his. A shimmering, wordless tendril of thought unfurled to touch his mind, threading with it in that familiar, comforting manner, nestling blissfully in his presence.

She broke the kiss but held on to him, retaining their link, her eyes closed, her forehead leaning against his. “Love you,” she murmured. “So much.”

Her eyes fluttered open and a soft smile touched her face as she gazed up at him. Releasing her embrace, she held her left hand between them, palm up. The ring rested on her palm, glinting in the soft glow of the morning sunlight that poured through the window. “Would you do the honors?”

Theta felt her mind touch his own, and he curled his own mental ribbon around it. He shut his eyes, feeling her lips brush against his own. For a moment, his hearts sped up, and there was only their minds and their bodies, pressing together, as his inner core softened and warmed up.

“I love you too,” he softly murmured, after they broke apart, his hand winding up to her hair and drifting his palm over her soft dark brown curls for a moment, until he sensed her eyes opening.

After her question, he replied “Of course,” then gingerly closed his forefinger and thumb around the little shining band. Gently he took her left hand in his and very carefully threaded her ring finger through it.
